Today, Apple launched the Apple Watch Series 4 watchOS 5.3.2. This update is intended for users who don’t have an iPhone that can run iOS 13 and can’t upgrade to watchOS 6.
You also need an iPhone that can run iOS 13 to upgrade an Apple Watch to watchOS 6. The iPhone 5s and iPhone 6 officially support the Apple Watch, but both have been discontinued this year by iOS 13.
What this means is that there is a set of users with an iPhone 5s or iPhone 6 and an Apple Watch Series 4 (probably very small). Such people can not download iOS 13, and their Apple Watch can not be updated to watchOS 6.
WatchOS 5.3.2 was first released last month for Apple Watch Series 1, Series 2, and Series 3, with security updates included:
- Impact: A remote attacker may be able to cause unexpected application termination or arbitrary code execution
- Description: An out-of-bounds read was addressed with improved input validation.
