The pre-orders now open, the highly anticipated all-new Mac Pro and Pro Display XDR has officially launched. YouTubers MKBHD, iJustine, and Jonathan Morrison have been reviewing the new professional Mac hardware over the past few weeks and sharing their first thoughts about what Apple has delivered. Follow for early impressions on the new Mac Pro and Pro Display XDR, benchmarks on performance, and more.
Six years after Apple launched the cylindrical design of the previous-gen Mac Pro, Apple delivered on its promise to make the Mac Pro modular again and also brought back a display option with the Pro Display XDR.
You can configure the Mac Pro with up to 28-core Intel Xeon processor, 1.5 TB RAM, dual Radeon Pro Vega II GPUs (equal to 4 graphics cards) and up to an 8 TB SSD. For 8 PCIe card slots, it’s also easy to customize and extend the new Mac Pro immediately or over time. And the exclusive Afterburner accelerator card is also available to take professional workflows to the next level.
Seeing the power of the Mac Pro put to the test is exciting, and we have some very early and impressive benchmarks. MKBHD noted that with almost 3GB / s read / write speeds for the internal SSD, the new Mac Pro put out the highest GeekBench scores he’s ever seen.
But how quickly the Mac Pro was able to render images, he was most impressed. In 4 minutes and 20 seconds, it was able to process a5-minute 8K video. To handle 8K video faster than real-time is a massively fast performance.
As far as thermal performance is concerned, Jonathan Morrison highlights the Mac Pro “does not make a sound even with every core lit up at nearly 100% which is bananas.”
In Jonathan’s Cinebench test, the Mac Pro came out with a wild CPU score of 9,918.
