Today a new Macotakara supply chain report sheds new light on the sizing details of the iPhone lineup in 2020. The article also contains one significant caveat in terms of design as opposed to what other sources have widely reported we can expect from the iPhone 12 lineup.
According to Macotakara’s report today, it is likely that the iPhone 12 series could have the “same housing design” as the iPhone 11, with camera technology being the only differentiator. This contradicts previous Ming-Chi Kuo reporting, who said the iPhone 12 will feature an iPhone4-like boxer design as part of a significant redesign of the chassis.
Today’s report goes on to say that the 5.4-inch iPhone 12 model will have a height that is “midway between iPhone SE and iPhone 8,” while the 6.1-inch version between iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro Max will be midway between. The 6.7-inch iPhone 12 is set to be “slightly bigger than the iPhone 11 Pro Max,” says Macotakara.
The report says the 6.7-inch iPhone 12 will be 7.4 mm in thickness, which is notably thinner than the iPhone 11 Pro Max’s 8.1 mm design. The report also notes that the 6.7-inch iPhone 12 uses a camera system that has a “bigger sensor than the rear camera of iPhone 11 Pro Max.”
Today’s report confirms Kuo’s previous report, saying the 5.4-inch and 6.1-inch models would feature dual-camera setups. Kuo has also said that there will be a different 6.1-inch model variant featuring a triple-camera setup, as well as a 3D flight time sensor — as will the 6.7-inch model.
Both Macotakara and Kuo have in the past accurately foreshadowed upcoming features and designs for the iPhone. But this year, Kuo’s reporting that the iPhone 12 will feature the iPhone4-like design has heavily leaned on that.
Previously Macotakara had posted mockups of what an iPhone4-like design would mean for the iPhone 12. One possibility is that the report today refers to iPhone 12 front-side. That would mean we shouldn’t expect the notch with this year’s iPhone update to get any smaller.
Here’s what we are currently expecting for the iPhone lineup 2020 to make things as clear as possible:
- “iPhone 9” with design identical to the iPhone 8, Touch ID, Home button – March
- 5.4-inch OLED iPhone, rear dual-camera – Fall
- 6.1-inch OLED iPhone, rear dual-camera – Fall
- 6.1-inch OLED, rear triple-camera and time-of-flight 3D tech – Fall
- 6.7-inch OLED, rear triple-camera and time-of-flight 3D tech – Fall
