Today Macotakara shared a new 5.5-inch mock-up of the 2021 iPhone which suggests a notchless screen and USB-C could be in the works instead of a Lightning port (or port at all). Also, the prototype shows what a different camera setup could be compared to what we expect on the iPhone 12 later this year.
We heard at the end of last year that Ming-Chi Kuo expects the highest-end 2021 iPhone to be a completely wireless device, dropping the Lightning port and missing the USB-C port too. Nonetheless, the rumored Macotakara shared prototype of the 5.5-inch 2021 iPhone today indicates that the entry-level model might make the switch to USB-C along with a notchless screen.
This 2021 iPhone mock-up was made using Alibaba data, so it’s worth taking that rumor with salt grain.
A 5.5-inch 2021 iPhone would likely mean it’s the entry model based on what we’re expecting for the 2020 iPhone lineup, with the more affordable iPhone 12 models coming in 5.4- and 6.1-inch sizes and the iPhone 12 Pro 6.1- and 6.7-inch displays landing. Macotakara does note that this is only one prototype that Apple takes into consideration so obviously, this design is not assured, and features will make it available on the market.
Macotakara says this prototype ‘s case dimensions are similar to the 5.4-inch 2020 iPhone but with a slightly larger 5.5-inch screen. One fascinating part of this prototype, however, will be the entry-level 2021 iPhone obtaining what a 3 or 4 camera setup might be. A major way for Apple to differentiate its iPhone lineup is with camera hardware and features, like the 11 Pro that has an additional lens over the iPhone 11.
For many years , Apple has worked towards making an iPhone with a “single glass slab” design. The iPhone X display design is still seen in the iPhone 11 lineup today (expected in the iPhone 12 series too) so completely removing the notch that houses the Face ID components and TrueDepth camera would be a big step forward in the screen to body ratio and Apple evolving the design of the iPhone display.
The iPhone 12 lineup might feature slightly smaller notches, but if this prototype turns out to be ringing real, the entire 2021 iPhone lineup will probably go notchless if the entry-level 5.5-inch model did.
The Macotakara video below suggests that Apple could launch its first front-facing under-screen camera with the 2021 iPhone lineup to make this possible notchless design actually happen.
