A new report on the supply chain says LG will make mini-LED screens for the 12.9-inch 5th generation iPad Pro. It says the new model — which is also expected to support 5G — will “earliest” launch in the final quarter of this year.
It follows from an earlier study that this year, LG will end Samsung’s reign as the sole provider of OLED iPhone screens.
As noted earlier, mini-LED should not be confused with microLED, which is going to be a completely new form of display technology that is likely to be first seen in the Apple Watch. A new form of backlighting used for LCD screens is Mini-LED.
The strength and controllability allows deeper blacks for brighter screens; better power efficiency; and thinner devices.
Back in February, we heard that Innolux was appointed as another mini-LED supplier, although one did not specify which models.
Whilst both reports point to a launch later this year, claims have been made that this could have now been pushed back into 2021.
