Popular HomeKit manufacturer Eve has announced that a few of its HomeKit-enabled accessories will be enabled by Thread later this month. Included in the items are the US version of the Eve door sensor and the EU version of Eve Energy. Eve Aqua and Eve Thermo firmware updates will follow shortly after.
A big part of HomeKit and the HomePod Mini is going to be thread support. In additional to Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, thread technology is a key aspect of the upcoming, open application layer standard built within the Zigbee Alliance by the Project Connected Home over IP (CHIP) Working Group. The IP foundation of Thread guarantees that devices from all manufacturers can connect to create a reliable network for running on connected home devices.
Thread and its low-power mesh networking technology are not based on a hub, so there is no single point of failure, and data packet routes can be alternated to access the internet if devices go offline. If a HomePod mini is added to the network, it will communicate with it and each other automatically with Thread-enabled accessories. Without users needing to configure something in advance, this connectivity occurs automatically. Thread support over the original HomePod is one of the HomePod Mini’s key features.
